Imagine waking up to the gentle sound of waves, opening your curtains to a beautiful turquoise sea and feeling the warm tropical breeze against your skin. The waters are filled with boats cruising in colourful long tails, palm trees sway in the wind along the shore and the aroma of fresh Thai cuisine permeates the morning air.

It doesn’t matter if you are on a honeymoon, a family holiday, an adventure with friends or a peaceful getaway you can use this guide for determining which island to visit in Thailand.
Understanding Thailand’s Two Beautiful Island Coasts
It is useful to know the location of the major island destinations in Thailand prior to selecting the island that you want to visit.
The islands are divided into two sides, the west side being the Andaman Sea and the east side being the Gulf of Thailand, most of which are widely used. Both have beautiful beaches, but different weather and experiences.
The Andaman Sea
It is a coastline renowned for its striking limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, white sandy beaches and stunning marine scenery. Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe are among its most popular destinations.
The weather is generally good from November to April but can vary.
The Gulf of Thailand
Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are in the Gulf. These islands boast stunning resorts, diving opportunities, wellness retreats and vibrant beach scenes.
January to September is a good time to holiday in the Gulf islands, and October to December is wetter, especially in November.
Here is one useful travel tip: Do not decide solely based on pictures of an island. Think about the time of year and modes of travel and activities that you wish to experience. This straightforward measure can significantly affect your holiday.
1. Phuket – A Little Bit of Everything
Phuket is an excellent choice for first-time visitors, and for good reason.
Thailand’s largest island combines lovely beaches with cultural sites, bustling markets, great restaurants and cosy resorts. It is also a good base for the exploration of the coast of Andaman.
However, Phuket is far from being all about the hustle and bustle on the beaches.
Patong is renowned for its entertainment, restaurants and nightlife. Kata and Karon are popular for their beautiful beaches, Bang Tao for its trendy resorts and laid-back environment.
If you want something different instead, then wander around Phuket Old Town. Colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings, independent cafés, local shops and street art provide a glimpse into another aspect of island life.
Boat trips are also available as are lovely views and traditional southern Thai cuisine.
Things to experience:
- Explore the colourful streets of Phuket Old Town.
- Relax at Kata or Karon Beach.
- Watch the sunset at Promthep Cape.
- Enjoy local Thai dishes at traditional restaurants.
- Discover the island’s temples and cultural attractions.
- Take a boat excursion to nearby islands.
Best for: First time visitors, families, couples, nightlife and beach lovers.
Suggested stay: 4–5 days.
My advice: If you are interested in extensive activities, comfortable places to stay and convenient travel services, then Phuket is one of the ‘best islands in Thailand.

2. Koh Phi Phi – A Picture-Perfect Tropical Escape
While some locations look beautiful in pictures, others don’t. Others make you stop and gaze at their beauty when you meet them in person. One of those places is Koh Phi Phi.
The Phi Phi Islands are in the Andaman Sea and are known for its tall limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons and crystal clear, turquoise waters.
Phi Phi Don is the main inhabited island, while Phi Phi Leh is where the renowned Maya Bay is located, which came to be internationally recognized after featuring in the film The Beach.
While beautiful, Maya Bay has rules of conservation to be followed. Don’t swim, closures may be in effect seasonally.
Apart from the famous Bay, you can have boat rides, find beautiful viewpoints and explore the marine surroundings.
Additionally, there are restaurants along the beach, small shops and entertainment at night in Phi Phi Don.
Things to experience:
- Visit Maya Bay when it is open.
- Enjoy panoramic views from Phi Phi Viewpoint.
- Explore the beautiful Pileh Lagoon.
- Take a boat trip around the islands.
- Try snorkelling with a responsible local operator.
- Enjoy dinner beside the beach.
Best for: Couples, photographers, adventure and social travellers.
Suggested stay: 2–3 days.
My vote: Koh Phi Phi is one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand for dramatic scenery. It can be very busy during the day, though, so overnight stays will give you more time to enjoy its ambiance.
3. Koh Lanta – A Peaceful Island with Beautiful Beaches
Koh Lanta is a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of Phuket and Phi Phi.
Life moves at a slower pace here. Beaches are long, relaxed and there is space to have a quiet afternoon.
Koh Lanta is in Krabi Province and it is one of those places that is a favourite spot among travellers that like a more peaceful and quiet place.
Also known as Phra Ae Beach, Long Beach is a beautiful beach. To the south there are more serene coastal locations and stunning natural scenery to be found.
Another attraction is Koh Lanta Old town. Traditional wooden buildings stand along the waterfront and small shops and restaurants reflect local life.
Those who love the nature may visit the Mu Ko Lanta National Park which is famous for its coastal scenery, forest landscapes and lighthouse.
Things to experience:
- Relax at Long Beach.
- Explore Koh Lanta Old Town.
- Visit Mu Ko Lanta National Park.
- Enjoy traditional Thai food.

- Discover the quieter southern beaches.

I would recommend Koh Lanta for those who are looking for a holiday that includes beautiful beaches, local experiences, and quiet days away from the hustle and bustle.
4. Koh Samui – Tropical Luxury and Island Charm
Koh Samui is an excellent choice for a romantic island getaway with some fashionable resorts and stunning beaches.
Koh Samui is situated in the Gulf of Thailand, and is popular for its relaxed lifestyle, hospitality and palm-fringed beaches, all with comfortable facilities.
Chaweng is the island’s vibrant hub for shopping, dining and water sports. If you want to stay a more quiet place you might want to go to Bophut, Mae Nam or Choeng Mon.
Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village is particularly lovely in the evening. You can visit its little shops, eat tasty seafood and dine by the seashore.
Just off the beaches, see Wat Phra Yai, which is home to the giant Buddha statue, or visit Na Muang Waterfall.

My recommendation: Koh Samui is one of the best Thai islands to visit if you’re looking for a balance of comfort, natural beauty and exciting experiences.
5. Koh Phangan – More Than the Famous Full Moon Party
Koh Phangan is well-known throughout the world for The famous Full Moon Party it hosts, but this is not all there is to the island.
This island, which is near Koh Samui, has a great balance of tranquil beaches, tropical scenery, wellness centers and social beach spots.
The main party destination is Haad Rin, which hosts a number of popular beach festivals. But the north beaches of the island are totally different.
For those who like a more peaceful ambience, consider Bottle Beach, Haad Salad or Chaloklum.
Koh Phangan is also a popular destination for yoga, meditation and wellness holidays. There are places to stop and relax, quiet cafes and opportunities to take time to enjoy the moment.

Koh Tao is an interesting destination for travellers who dream of exploring the underwater world.
This tiny Gulf island is renowned for its stunning marine environment and diving schools. It’s a place for both novice and advanced divers to explore vibrant coral and tropical marine life.
The primary social space is Sairee beach where you will find restaurants and cafes, accommodation and stunning sunset vistas.
If you want a more laid back beach trip, head to Tanote Bay, Ao Leuk or Freedom Beach. When it’s a nice day, these areas are also great for swimming and snorkelling.
You don’t need previous diving experience to enjoy Koh Tao. Many visitors come to get their first dive lesson and others just come to see the boats and enjoy the coastal scenery.

7. Koh Lipe – A Tiny Island of Extraordinary Beauty
Think soft white sand, clear turquoise water and colours with all the sea life just below the surface. This is the sort of beauty Koh Lipe has to offer.
Koh Lipe is a small tropical island in southern Thailand, close to the Malaysian border, which has a wonderfully laid-back feel about it.
The primary landing point is Pattaya Beach, and Sunrise Beach offers stunning morning views. Sunset Beach is a more relaxed place to experience the sunset.
Walking Street links various areas of the island, and there are small restaurants, cafés and local shops in abundance.

Beach clubs and bustling streets and big resorts are not essential for all islands. Sometimes, it’s in the quiet moments you’ll find the most memorable.
Koh Yao Noi is in a bay between Krabi and Phuket on the island of Koh Lanta. It has its own style of living with traditional villages, coconut plantations, local restaurants and beautiful views of limestone islands with a slower pace of life.

Koh Chang is an excellent destination for combining beach days with tropical adventures.
In the eastern part of Thailand, close to Cambodia, Koh Chang is one of Thailand’s biggest islands. It is famous for its verdant undulating hills, waterfalls, stunning beaches and their traditional fishing villages.
White Sand Beach is one of the most popular areas, and Kai Bae has some pretty nice views of the beach. Lonely Beach has a more social atmosphere.

If you wish to find a tranquil island with stunning beaches and ample nature, Koh Kood is a name to keep in mind.
Koh Kood is situated in the east of Thailand and is renowned for its tropical foliage, blue waters and laid back vibe.
One of the most popular coastal areas on the island is Klong Chao Beach. Klong Chao Waterfall is another beautiful location nearby that can be visited.
There are not as many large entertainment areas on the island of Koh Kood as there are on the busier islands. Rather, small resorts, local communities and quiet beaches will be found.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Thailand’s Islands?
The tropical climate of Thailand makes it an ideal year-round destination, although there are variations between the two main island areas.
For the latest travel information, seasonal updates and destination guidance, visit the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the country’s official tourism organisation.
November to April – Andaman Coast
This is typically a popular time to visit Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe. The weather is generally better for sailing and/or beach going. Be sure to book accommodation early as December to February are very busy.
January to September – Gulf Islands
During most of this time Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao will provide good beaches. January to April is a popular time and June to August can also be a nice time of the year.
October – December – Make a careful plan
During this time periods heavier rain can occur over the Gulf islands, especially in November. Overall, the coast of the Andaman is heading towards its drier season, but October may not be as smooth.
Each island has its own weather patterns, so check the local weather forecast before planning a trip!
Keep in mind, weather is not promised! When travelling always check the sea conditions, ferry schedules and national park closures.
How to Plan an Island-Hopping Holiday
One common mistake travellers make is trying to visit too many islands in a short time.
While Thailand offers some great ferry connections in many parts of the country, each transfer is a process that takes time. Think about your trips, travel on the road, your bags and weather setbacks.
There are three routes to consider.
Route 1: Phuket – Koh Phi Phi – Koh Lanta
This is the one that I would recommend for first timers who are looking for a balance of a beach, local experience, and scenery.
Begin in Phuket, visit Koh Phi Phi for spectacular scenery and end in Koh Lanta for a tranquil beach getaway.
Route 2: Koh Samui – Koh Phangan – Koh Tao
It’s a great route to Gulf islands.
Have a comfortable resort stay in Koh Samui, see the beaches and wellness activities in Koh Phangan and end your trip with a dive or snorkelling in Koh Tao.
Route 3: Koh Chang – Koh Kood
This is the route if you’d like to stay away from more hectic areas. Visit the beaches and waterfalls of Koh Chang before heading to Koh Kood for stunning beaches and quiet days.
Be aware of the time required between connections and don’t plan an international flight right after a ferry.
Discover More of Thailand Beyond the Beaches
Thailand is so much more than its renowned beaches.
If you’ve already visited its famous islands, why not visit its quieter islands, the beautiful landscapes of Trang or the eastern coastal areas?
You can even enjoy a holiday on an island and then an adventure inland as well.
Khao Sok National Park is a beautiful destination to add to your Thailand tours, featuring ancient rainforest, limestone mountains and the spectacular Cheow Lan lake.
