Not every Thailand adventure needs to begin with a beach. The best journeys can also be made north, to discover entirely different escapes from the daily grind, with ancient temples, mountain landscapes and colourful local traditions.

Welcome to Chiang Mai!

This charming city in northern Thailand has a character all of its own. Its streets are filled with history, its markets offer delicious local flavours, and a break from city life to be had in the countryside that surrounds it.

Mornings can start with visits to the temples and a freshly brewed cup of coffee, while the afternoons provide a fantastic opportunity to head towards the waterfalls and the mountain viewpoints offer beautiful views across the surrounding countryside. Evenings are perfect for exploring the lively night markets, and a bowl of khao soi is an absolute must-try.

Every corner has something to discover, and three days offer a lovely introduction to the city.

Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning to discover more, this chiang mai itinerary will help make each day count.

Your northern Thailand adventure starts here!

Your Chiang Mai Itinerary 3 Days at a Glance

Before beginning your adventure, here is a quick look at what awaits you.

Day 2Mountains and local lifestyleDoi Suthep, Wat Pha Lat, Nimmanhaemin and One Nimman
Day 3Nature and wildlifeDoi Inthanon National Park or a responsible elephant experience

This chiang mai itinerary 3 days is a combination of culture, nature, food, and shopping, all of which do not make the holiday rush.

Day 1: Historic Heart of Chiang Mai

Morning to evening – Temples, local food and colourful markets

Chiang Mai’s history is available at every corner in the Old City, your first day.

This area is enclosed by a historic moat and part of historic city walls, and features lovely temples, old city shops and charming little streets. It’s best explored on foot.

Morning – Explore the Ancient Temples

1. Tha Phae Gate – Begin at a historic landmark

Begin your day at one of Chiang Mai’s most iconic landmarks, Tha Phae Gate.

The historic entrance was originally a part of the city’s defence walls. It’s now a favourite gathering spot for those who want to take photos of the old brick buildings.

Get here earlier to beat the rush before the streets get too busy.

2. Wat Chedi Luang – Admire an ancient temple

Then, head to Wat Chedi Luang, one of the city’s historic monuments.

Its enormous brick chedi is the main attraction. The chedi was damaged by an earthquake in 1545, but its remaining structure is still an impressive sight.

Stroll around the monument, take in the traditional features and appreciate the tranquil atmosphere of the temple. It once housed the Emerald Buddha, which is now displayed at the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

3. Wat Phra Singh – Discover beautiful Lanna architecture

Head to Wat Phra Singh, a popular temple with beautiful Lanna architecture.

The complicated is decorated with gold, the wooden carvings here are detailed along with beautiful traditional constructions. Keep an eye out for Viharn Lai Kham, especially for its historical paintings.

Spend time exploring the grounds of the temple and enjoying the details.

Tips for travelling, wear modest attire when visiting temples. Cover your shoulders and knees, remove your shoes where required and respect people who are praying.

Afternoon – Savour the flavours of Northern Thailand

4. Enjoy a bowl of Khao Soi

Khao soi is a must-try food while in Chiang Mai.

This iconic northern Thai dish is no exception, featuring egg noodles in a thick coconut curry, typically chicken or beef. Special flavour from crispy noodles, lime, shallots and pickled mustard greens.

Afterwards, go back to the local restaurant for a tasty meal to enjoy—this is a traditional local place for this. Now head back to the local restaurant for a tasty meal to enjoy, which is a traditional local place for this.

5. Wat Chiang Man – Visit a less crowded temple

Following lunch, head to Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple in Chiang Mai.

It was established in the late thirteenth century, around the time Chiang Mai was founded, making it one of the city’s most historically significant temples.

It has an interesting feature, which is the Elephant Chedi, in which stone elephant figures seem to be supporting the base of the structure.

A tranquil location perfect to visit outside the hustle and bustle.

6. Warorot Market – Experience the local life every day!

Next, explore the colours and flavours of Warorot Market, also known locally as Kad Luang.

This traditional market is filled with fresh produce, dried fruits, spices, textiles, snacks and local products. It is a great chance to observe the everyday life of the people and how they go shopping.

Be sure to try some of the northern Thai delicacies like fragrant herb sausage (sai ua) and the chilli dip (nam prik ong) with a tomato base.

There may also be some nice local wares that you can bring home.

Evening – Enjoy Chiang Mai After Dark

7. Chiang Mai Night Bazaar – Shop, eat and explore

After sunset, walk down Chang Khlan Road to the Night Bazaar.

Clothing, handicrafts, artwork, souvenirs and food stalls are on offer in the market. A nice place to take an evening stroll and find some locally made products.

On Sunday, try the Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road. It features crafts, food on the street and entertainers.

Walking Street (Wua Lai Road) is another good option for visitors on Saturday.

Take it easy on your first day and relax into a warm meal before unwinding in the city’s vibrant culture.

Day 2: Discover the Mountains and Modern Chiang Mai

Early morning to evening – sacred temples, forest scenery and stylish cafés

Today, leave the historic streets behind and head towards the mountains.

The beauty of nature around Chiang Mai is just as enchanting as that of its culture. Riding up Doi Suthep provides a fresh mountain air, forest vistas and one of Thailand’s most renowned temples.

Morning – Mountain Temples – Visit

1. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep – See the golden temple above the city

No Chiang Mai travel itinerary feels complete without a visit to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

This sacred temple is located at the top of Doi Suthep mountain, one of the most significant religious sites in northern Thailand.

You can reach the temple using the famous Naga staircase or the available funicular.

The golden chedi inside is particularly beautiful. It shines brightly under the sun and the surrounding shrines, bells and Buddha images cause a calm atmosphere.

It’s also a place that has a vantage point with nice views over Chiang Mai when weather is sunny.

Go early in the morning to experience cooler temperatures and for a less busy experience.

2. Wat Pha Lat – Discover a peaceful forest temple

Once you’ve toured Doi Suthep, head to Wat Pha Lat.

Surrounded by trees, rocks and flowing water, this beautiful temple feels like a peaceful retreat within the forest.

It is perfect to blend in with the environment due to its traditional stone structures and Buddha images. Alternatively, you can go over certain sections of the historic Monk’s Trail, but in some areas careful footwear and care is paramount, especially when it rains.

A great destination to relax and take in the more laid-back side of Chiang Mai.

Afternoon – The Creative side of the City.

3. Nimmanhaemin Road – Discover cafés and boutiques

Head back into the city and visit the famous Nimmanhaemin (or Nimman).

This fashionable neighbourhood is known for its independent cafés, boutique shops, art spaces and modern restaurants.

Find a comfortable café, order an iced Thai coffee and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

It’s also a great place to find local designers and creative businesses.

4. One Nimman – Shop and find local treasures.

Continue to One Nimman, a popular lifestyle and shopping destination.

It’s a beautiful place to visit, with its attractive architecture, courtyard and independent shops and coffee houses.

Shop for handmade crafts, fashion and souvenirs at the shops. There’s also time to take a break for a snack or refreshing drink before evening plans.

Evening – Enjoy Northern Thai Food

Chiang Mai’s food culture is amazing, so enjoy your second night with local cuisine.

You can eat sticky rice with sai ua, gaeng hang lay (northern Thai pork curry) or nam prik ong.

After a day of walking, you may opt to experience a traditional Thai massage at a trustworthy spa.

Pick a treatment that you’re comfortable with and savour the end of a day of relaxation.

Day 3: Escape into Chiang Mai’s Beautiful Nature

Full day – Mountains, waterfalls and unforgettable experiences

On your last day, go for a trip of the countryside.

It is important to enjoy one’s time outdoors to appreciate the beauty of the mountains around Chiang Mai, which is so abundant.

There are two great options available. Explore the mountain views and waterfalls at Doi Inthanon National Park or opt for a responsible elephant experience.

Option 1: Explore Doi Inthanon National Park

1. Doi Inthanon – Visit Thailand’s highest mountain

Doi Inthanon National Park is one of the most beautiful natural areas in northern Thailand.

The park is also home to the highest peak in Thailand (around 2,565 metres) and is well-known for its waterfalls, forests, cool temperatures and its viewpoints.

The journey from Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon National Park usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours by road, depending on your starting point and traffic.

2. Royal Twin Pagodas – See the mountains from the pagodas.

One of the park’s most recognisable attractions is the pair of Royal Twin Pagodas, built to commemorate the 60th birthdays of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit.

They have beautiful gardens with colourful flowers and views of the mountain surrounding them and elegant architecture.

Slowly stroll around the gardens and appreciate the serene ambience.

3. Wachirathan Waterfall – Enjoy the beauty of falling water

Next stop is Wachirathan Waterfall.

The water flows over the rocks into a pool of water, surrounded by lush greenery, which creates an impressive sight.

Viewing areas are designated for viewing and taking photos. Take care when navigating wet surfaces – paths can be slippery.

4. Ang Ka Nature Trail – Stroll through a cloud forest.

Ang Ka Nature Trail is a must-visit for all nature enthusiasts.

Enjoy a short walk through a high-altitude forest filled with ferns, moss-covered trees and dense vegetation.

A wooden walkway will allow the visitor to be able to explore the environment and protect the natural area.

May be a bit cooler than the city, so take a light jacket.

5. Mae Klang Luang – Explore village life.

In time, visit Mae Klang Luang, beautiful village area with mountain scenery and fields.

Mae Klang Luang is a community associated with the Karen people, known for its rice terraces, locally grown coffee and mountain scenery.

The green fields during the growing season make excellent views. Spend some time enjoying a local coffee and appreciate the slower pace of village life.

Keep in mind that this is a life community. Respect and take permission before taking pictures of residents.

Travel tip: Doi Inthanon is recommended for a full day excursion. Plan for transport and check park conditions before visiting.

Option 2: Enjoy a Responsible Elephant Experience

Although mountain sightseeing may appeal more to you than wildlife itself, you might want to go visit an elephant welfare centre near his city of Chiang Mai.

There are several elephant tourism operators in the region, but there is a variation in the care of elephant.

Do some research on the organisation before booking. Check for clear welfare guidelines, proper elephant care, and natural elephant behavior. As highlighted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, travellers should choose certified eco-friendly sanctuaries that prioritize animal welfare.

Ignore venues that have elephant rides or performance/drag shows where elephants interact with people. Keep in mind that the term ‘sanctuary’ does not imply that animal welfare will automatically be good.

A responsible visit can educate you about elephant behaviour, the conservation of elephants and why they are important to protect.

Evening – Complete Your Journey: by means of the Ping River

Take a relaxed end of the day before heading back to Chiang Mai after your country break.

The beauty of Ping River makes it an ideal location for dinner, with restaurants and cafés along the water’s edge providing a picturesque setting.

Have your favourite northern Thai cuisine, sample something new for dessert or go for a quiet stroll.

At the end of the evening consider places you’ve found and memories you have brought home.

Planning More Time? Try a Chiang Mai 4 Day Itinerary

The main attractions can be enjoyed in three days but if you have a fourth you’ll have the luxury of more exploring time.

One of these amazing activities could be part of a chiang mai 4 day itinerary.

  • Mae Kampong Village: Explore a peaceful mountain village surrounded by forests, streams and green hills. Have a cup of local coffee and experience local village life.
  • Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls: These are unusual waterfalls of limestone rocks with textured surfaces, which provide good traction under certain conditions. Follow the designated routes and take care when climbing.
  • Thai Cooking Class: Discover local delights like Khao soi, green curry and mango sticky rice. There are also a number of classes with a trip to a traditional market.
  • Ping River: An additional afternoon to enjoy the relaxed ambiance and the cafés and restaurants along the river.

Another day will be a great chance to have a look around Chiang Mai without getting into a rush.

How Many Days in Chiang Mai Do You Need?

Wondering how many days in Chiang Mai you should plan for? Three to four full days are ideal for a first visit, giving you enough time to explore the city and its surrounding countryside..

The following is a simple guide:

  • 2 days in chiang mai: Explore the Old City temples, enjoy local food, visit Doi Suthep and discover a night market.
  • 3 days in chiang mai: Follow the main route in this guide, including temples, markets and a countryside experience.
  • 4 days or more: Include Mae Kampong, Bua Tong Waterfalls, cooking class or another mountain adventure.

When you have only 2 days in chiang mai, stick to the Old City and Doi Suthep instead of hitting all the sites.

If you want a more relaxed holiday, then a chiang mai 4 day itinerary is a better option, and it will allow you to visit beyond the area of the major tourist attractions.

In the end, the most suitable chiang mai itinerary is contingent on the interests, travel speed and amount of time you have.

Where to Stay in Chiang Mai

Selecting the right neighbourhood can make your holiday more comfortable.

  • Old City: Ideal for those who want to venture around on foot and visit the temples and traditional restaurants and markets. There are many boutique hotels and guesthouses.
  • Nimman: Ideal for travellers who enjoy modern cafés, independent shops, restaurants and a lively atmosphere!
  • Riverside: Excellent for couples and guests looking for more relaxed evenings, scenic views and a quieter area.

The Old City or Nimman is the ideal place to stay for this three-day chiang mai travel itinerary as sightseeing is easier there.

What to Eat in Chiang Mai

One thing has been an integral part of discovering northern Thailand and that is food! These are some of the local treats to try:

  • Khao Soi: Coconut curry noodle soup with crispy noodles.
  • Sai Ua: Northern Thai herb sausage.
  • Nam Prik Ong: Tomato and pork chilli dip served with vegetables.
  • Pork Curry (Gaeng Hang Lay): A rich northern Thai style pork curry.
  • Khanom Jeen Nam Ngiao: Rice noodles with a northern Thai tomato-based broth.
  • Mango Sticky Rice: A delicious dessert with sweet mango, sticky rice and coconut milk.

Dine at small local eateries and at old-fashioned food stalls to taste the local flavours.

How to get the most out of your trip to Chiang Mai

  • Check the weather: November to February is usually a good time to go sightseeing. High temps and seasonal air pollution can occur during March and April.
  • Take cash: The cash is needed in smaller shops and stall vendors.
  • Modest Attire: Up to temple rules, cover your feet as required.
  • Stay hydrated: Bring water, particularly for outdoor activities.
  • Arrange transport: Use songthaews, ride-hailing services or private drivers for longer journeys.
  • Check air quality: Seasonal smoke can affect outdoor activities. Consult the air quality forecasts before travelling.
  • Respect the animals: Take caution when researching elephant experiences and make sure that you are travelling with a responsible operator.
  • Plan accordingly: Mountain trips may be impacted by rain and traffic.

Take Home a Little of Chiang Mai

Three days in Chiang Mai can make for an experience that lasts so much longer than the holiday itself!

Perhaps you will remember the golden chedi at Doi Suthep, the peaceful forest surroundings of Wat Pha Lat or the first delicious bowl of khao soi you enjoyed in the Old City.

Perhaps it will be the colourful markets, the friendly cafés or the beautiful mountain scene. The magic of Chiang Mai. It combines history, culture, food and nature all in one that makes each day unique.

My rule is to take time, go beyond the tourist hot spots and leave room for the surprises. The best part of travelling isn’t always arriving at the next destination. Sometimes it’s just taking in the little things in between.
