Imagine you’ve just disembarked from a speedboat, the water is turquoise, and the warm air of the island has a delicious aroma of freshly cooked tuna, chilli, coconut and spices. You go to a little local café, place an order for a filling Maldivian meal and find out it isn’t as expensive as you thought.

It’s the Maldives’ hidden side.

Yes, the price of food in Maldives can be expensive, particularly at private-island resorts. But eat wisely and the picture completely changes. Having a cup of coffee or a bite to eat at a local café or small restaurant, or a traditional snack at a guesthouse, makes for a more budget-friendly Maldives holiday.

Therefore, dear travellers, let’s peek behind the fancy menus and find out the true Maldives food cost – from inexpensive local meals to tempting resort dinners that can easily blow your budget!

Are Maldives Food Prices Really Expensive?

The honest answer is: It varies based on where you eat.

When you’re staying at a luxury hotel throughout the holiday period, the food bill could be one of the most expensive items on your holiday list. Expect to pay US$25–100 or more at the resort restaurants, and even more at fine dining restaurants.

The local islands, however, have a different story.

The local cafe serves a basic meal for MVR 30-60 while the tourist-oriented restaurants on the islands will usually charge for a main course at around US$8-20.

Hence, it is important to ask the question, “is food expensive in Maldives?” while keeping in mind your destination.

The real question is, Where will you be dining?

It can make a surprisingly significant difference to your holiday budget.

A Simple Look at Maldives Food Prices

It’s a good idea to have an idea of what you might spend before you make your food budget. Depending on the type of food services – local café, tourist restaurant or luxury resort – the prices of food in Maldives can vary significantly.

Here is a simple guide to give you an idea:

Type of meal                                             Approximate price

Local snacks / Hedhikaa                     MVR 5–20 each

Local café meal                                        MVR 30–100

Casual local restaurant                       US$5–15

Tourist-friendly restaurant                  US$8–20+

Mid-range resort dinner                        US$25–45+

Luxury resort dinner                              US$60–140+

These are general price ranges, rather than set prices. The total cost of your meal may differ depending on the island, the restaurant, the amount of food served, the resort you are travelling to and whether taxes or service charges are included.

The main difference is in the places where you eat it. Resorts can make eating very expensive and resort restaurants can cost up to 20% more than local cafés and small restaurants.

Therefore, travellers, don’t give up on eating delicious foods for the sake of saving money.

It’s all about the timing — when to eat local and when to indulge, as well as what to look out for before ordering.

What Does Food Cost on a Local Island?

This is where you can get a great deal from the Maldives if you’re on a budget.

The food is what local residents eat and can be found at local cafes and small restaurants on local islands. Rice, fish curry, dhal, roshi, noodles, fried snacks and simple dishes, often without making a fortune in the luxury resort.

Small cafes (or teahouses – hotaa) can be especially good value locally. The cost of a meal is approximately MVR 30-60 depending on the dish and the island.

You could have:

  • Rice with fish curry
  • Garudhiya with rice and chilli
  • Mas huni with roshi
  • Dhal and vegetable curry
  • Grilled tuna
  • Maldivian short eats

This is one of my favourite ways of getting to know the country: eat like the local people.

If you want to learn about the dishes in more detail before you begin ordering around the islands, check out our Maldivian Food Guide or our Maldives Halal Food Guide – it’s a great resource to use before you get your orders in.

A Taste of Maldives Without the Big Bill

One of the best ways to keep food costs down is to choose traditional Maldivian dishes.

Maldivian cuisine is simple, flavourful and built around ingredients such as tuna, coconut, rice, chilli and spices.

Mas Huni

Shredded tuna, coconut, onion and chilli, typically served with roshi, for breakfast. Filling, local and usually cheap.

Garudhiya

A soothing clear fish broth served with rice, lime, chilli and onion. A good option for those who want something simple, but distinctly Maldivian.

Fihunu Mas

Fish marinated in a spicy mix and cooked on a grill. This is a good one to check out if you’re a seafood enthusiast.

Hedhikaa

These little Maldivian snacks are ideal when you are trying your hand at a few different dishes without going out for dinner. Consider fish cakes, rolls and other savoury snacks.

Some traditional dishes can be found in local 2026 restaurants for just a few dollars – and hedhikaa is an individual item and can cost a few Maldivian rufiyaa.

Seriously folks, but this is where the Maldives gets cool!

Even the most budget friendly of foods can be memorable.

Food in Maldives Resorts: Where Your Budget Can Disappear

Now on the flip side.

Eating on an inhabited island is entirely different to Food in Maldives resorts.

There are no easy areas to stroll outside and see a line of cheap cafes at private resorts, unlike public resorts. However, the ingredients must also get to the far-flung islands and the resorts also have several restaurants, international menus and upscale dining.

This means that prices might escalate rapidly.

According to a current pricing review for 2026, the average price of a resort dinner is US$25–45 or more, and for luxury resorts, around US$60–140. The same source points out that the displayed price can also be made up of the GST and service charges.

Then there’s another thing that many travellers miss,

Always read the price tag and what it covers

The prices of some resorts include taxes and service charges, others do not.

An example of an adult rate for a dinner meal plan from Patina Maldives is US$116 per adult per night, the pre-tax rate is displayed separately.

On the upscale side, Soneva Fushi offers half board room rentals to as high as US$250 per adult per night, from January 2026 and taxes and service charges included.

These are luxury examples, of course, not every traveller will pay. But they demonstrate the significance of looking into the meal plan before booking.

Is Food Expensive in Maldives Resorts?

Yes, compared to local islands.

However, that doesn’t automatically imply that the eating establishments in resorts are bad deals.

If your resort is located on an isolated private island, and you would prefer to have breakfast, lunch and dinner all on one location, a higher price tag might just be part of the deal.

The error is that they book a room-only accommodation and then don’t verify the restaurant costs.

What if you found a great resort room at a great price, but each lunch and dinner would be a separate cost? All of a sudden, the deal doesn’t seem so appealing.

Before booking, check:

  • Is breakfast included?
  • Is half board available?
  • Does full board include drinks?
  • Are taxes and service charges included?
  • Can you dine at all restaurants under the meal plan?
  • Is there an additional charge for expensive meals?
  • Is there a daily dining credit?
  • Are snacks and bottled drinks included?

Many resorts will provide half board, full board, or all-inclusive packages, in part due to the fact that eating out on your own might make spending more difficult to predict.

How to Save Money on Maldives Food Prices

If I was going to go to Maldives with a tight budget, here’s where my focus would be.

1. Stay on a local island

This is most likely the largest saving.

If you don’t want to stay a whole holiday on a private resort island, then you should try to stay at an island that has some guesthouses and also has some local restaurants. The access to a larger selection of budget-friendly food and the opportunity to experience the island life as well.

2. Eat local at least once a day

There is no need to eliminate all restaurants.

Eat breakfast or lunch locally and go out for a special dinner. This provides you with the best of both worlds.

3. Make breakfast count.

A good breakfast can help to curb your hunger until later in the day.

If breakfast is provided as part of the stay, enjoy this meal rather than ordering a full meal a few hours later.

4. Choose traditional dishes

Local curries, rice dishes, tuna and hedhikaa are usually far more considerate of your wallet than international, imported dishes.

5. Ask your guesthouse for local recommendations

This is one of the travel hacks that can really help.

Ask: When you need to eat in a budget-friendly restaurant, where do you go?

You might be steered towards a small coffee shop that you would have missed if you hadn’t been instructed to go.

6. Check the resort meal plan carefully

When booking in at a resort, please consider the following options before booking your stay, breakfast only, half or full board and all-inclusive.

Please do not assume the lowest room rate.

Consider the total cost of your holiday.

7. Keep an eye on drink costs.

What seems like a reasonable meal until they add the drinks.

At resorts, drinks can represent an additional cost to your daily budget, with both water and soft drink costs adding up. Water and soft drinks, along with other drinks, can increase your daily budget, especially at resorts.

A day to day food budget

Therefore, how much should you save?

A wise first estimate for a traveller who is staying at a local island and who is eating mostly in a local Café might be US$20-35 per day per person, depending on the choices of the traveller.

A pleasant budget can be based on:

Breakfast: US$3–7

Lunch: US$5–12

Dinner: US$7–15

Snacks/drinks: US$3–8

That means you’ll be able to spend about US$18–42 per day, and you have ample opportunity to spend less if you do the simple local eating.

But for resorts, I’d set aside a lot more. Current resort meals run from approximately US$25 – US$100+ per person depending upon the resort and restaurant.

That is why when choosing a place to stay you should take into account your food budget.

Local Island or Resort: Which Is Better for Food?

There is no single right answer.

If you want…Consider…
The lowest food costsLocal island
Authentic local dishesLocal island
More restaurant choiceMalé or larger local islands
Easy dining without planningResort meal plan
Fine diningPrivate-island resort
Predictable spendingFull board or all-inclusive
A mix of local life and luxurySplit your stay

If you want to think outside the box when it comes to saving money, my Maldives on a Budget guide will help you cut the cost of your holiday without going so far as to reduce the food.

If this is your first time in the Maldives, consider reading our Maldives Travel Guide and official insights from the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (Visit Maldives)  before you begin to plan your trip.

My Favourite Budget-Friendly Approach

When I was asked by you people what I would want to do if I had to split food and experience…I would not try to make every meal the cheapest.

Instead, I would opt for my spending locations.

Have a simple Maldivian breakfast. Visit a local café for lunch. Please reserve one evening for a gorgeous evening by the water. Enjoy authentic snacks between.

This way you’re not just saving money.

You are developing a holiday specializing in various tastes.

Because the Maldives is not just about what’s on your plate. It’s a morning in the lagoon, a day of fresh tuna and a little café, and a night of dinner surrounded by palms as the sun sets in gold.

So, Is Food Expensive in Maldives?

It may be – but it doesn’t have to be.

The biggest difference comes down to where you stay and where you eat.

You can find good value local island dining; a simple meal will cost just a few pounds. Resort dining is a different matter, though, as meals may be a few tens of dollars with luxury dining going up to a lot more.

Therefore, while coming up with the Maldives food cost, you need not just look for the lowest priced meal.

Consider what you would like to experience. For real flavours, go to local cafes and actually enjoy maldivian cuisine for the authentic flavours. A resort meal plan might be preferable if you desire to dine right beside the private lagoon without making much work.

What about if you want both?

Well, that could be the sweetest one of them all.

Final Bite

The Maldives is known as a luxury destination but its food is another matter.

There are numerous small cafés, curries (steaming hot curries), spicy tuna, warm roshi and little plates of hedhikaa (which is actually very small), which are far more affordable behind the shiny resort restaurants.

So, to all of you who are headed to the Maldives, please don’t come here thinking that everything you eat is going to cost you an arm and a leg.

Whenever possible, eat local to experience real world holiday vibes. Resort Dining – It is important to plan your meals in the resort before you book. Reserve your splurge for the times that count.

Sometimes the best meal in paradise is not the most expensive one. It is the one that you find when you least expect it.

FAQ

Is food expensive in the Maldives?

This depends on the food provided. Local cafés on the islands are very affordable, whereas resort ones are expensive.

How much does a meal cost on a local island?

A basic local meal costs around £1.50 to £5 ($2–$6 USD).

How to save money on food?

Remain on a local island, enjoy local culinary delights such as tuna curry and purchase local short eats (hedhikaa).

Should I purchase a resort meal plan or not?

Yes, in the case of a private resort. Unanticipated bills for taxes and services can result from paying for food individually.
