Sawasdee, my dear travellers, and welcome to World Holiday Vibes!
There is a moment in Krabi when you realise that the best part of the journey may be just around the corner.
That might be when your long tail boat runs between the high limestone cliffs. Maybe it’s when you walk on a peaceful beach, with the soft white sand under your feet. Maybe it’s the sunset behind the Andaman Sea after a day’s adventure, anyway.
When it comes to life’s simple pleasures, Krabi has this knack of making them memorable.
Beautifully located on the Andaman Sea of Thailand, this destination offers beautiful beaches, island getaways, natural wonders and lively seaside towns. Ao Nang is a great place to stay to explore, and Railay is a completely different scene.
So, how do you fit the best of Krabi into your holiday?
Here are three-, five- and seven-day travel plans that make up this Krabi itinerary, which you can select depending on the time, your interest and travel style.
Getting to know Krabi before your journey
Krabi is a province in southern Thailand, known for its natural beauty and the relaxed coastal vibe. It features stunning beaches, traditional fishing villages, tropical forests and some stunning islands.
If you are travelling to Ao Nang for the first time, then this is one of the easiest places to stay in Ao Nang. It offers a lot of hotels, restaurants, shops and boat services. It also offers convenient access to Railay and popular excursions to the islands.
Another favourite is Railay. It is linked to the mainland, but the surrounding limestone cliffs make it a place that is typically visited by boat. This creates a secluded, island-like atmosphere to the area.
Krabi Town is different though, with local markets, temples, riverside scenery and everyday Thai life, just to mention a few.
Here is a quick look at the main areas:
| Area | What to experience |
| Ao Nang | Restaurants, beaches and boat excursions |
| Railay | Limestone cliffs, beaches and rock climbing |
| Phra Nang | Beautiful beach and Princess Cave |
| Krabi Town | Local markets, temples and riverside views |
| Hong Islands | Lagoons, beaches and island scenery |
| Klong Muang | Peaceful beaches and resorts |
For your first visit, I recommend choosing Ao Nang as your main base. It makes travelling to many of Krabi’s popular attractions easier.
How many days in Krabi should you spend?
One of the most common questions when planning a holiday is how long to stay. The answer depends on your interests and the experiences you want to enjoy.
If you are wondering how many days you should spend in Krabi, here is my suggestion:
| Duration | Suggested experiences |
| 3 days | Ao Nang, Railay and Four Islands |
| 4 days | Add Tiger Cave Temple and Emerald Pool |
| 5 days | Include the Hong Islands |
| 7 days | Explore quieter beaches and Krabi Town |
Three days is enough to give a short introduction to the destination. Five days provide more balance between beaches and trips to the islands and inland. 7 days will allow you to have more time to see the sights without the rush.
Five to seven days is the suggested length for the first visit, if you have time.
The 3-Day Krabi Itinerary: A beautiful first taste of Thailand’s coast
Three days isn’t that long, but there are some great places to visit in Krabi.
This is a 3 day krabi itinerary which emphasizes Ao Nang, Railay and the surrounding islands. Perfect for those who wish to enjoy scenic beaches and thrilling boat rides without needing a longer holiday.
Day 1 – Ao Nang: Let the sea welcome you
Morning – Discover Ao Nang Beach
Start your holiday at Ao Nang beach.
One of Krabi’s most popular destinations, this vibrant coastal region offers a wealth of activities and sights. The long-tail boats are painted in bright colours and are docked along the coast, and the limestone structures form a stunning backdrop visible through the sea.
Enjoy a peaceful walk along the beach, enjoy breakfast at a nearby café and spend some time watching the boats.
You don’t have to cram all the activities into the first morning. Relax and put yourself in holiday mood.
Afternoon – Visit Noppharat Thara Beach
Ao Nang is only a short trip from the Noppharat Thara Beach.
This beach is famous for its long sandy shores and views of the offshore islands and is quieter than the busy Ao Nang main area.
At low tide, you can see some interesting beaches/sandy areas. A beautiful place to walk, picnic or have a lazy afternoon.
Evening – Enjoy Thai food
Come back to Ao Nang and enjoy the restaurants there.
Eat out and try a variety of dishes that are popular, like Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup and fresh seafood. Mango sticky rice is a delicious dessert.
Enjoy a traditional Thai massage or a relaxing coastal stroll at the end of your first day in Thailand.
Travel tip: If you arrive in Krabi late in the day, save one evening to relax and have a quiet meal.
Day 2 – Railay & Phra Nang: Cliffs & Sea!
One place I would never miss visiting on a first Krabi visit is Railay.
Morning – Take a long-tail boat to Railay
Head to Ao Nang Beach and board a long tail boat to go down to Railay West.
The short boat journey offers fantastic views! On approaching the shore, you will find beautiful limestone cliffs towering over the beach.
When the weather is right, it is a gorgeous spot to swim at Railay West, go for walks along the sand and enjoy the view.
Late morning – Visit Phra Nang Cave Beach
Head to Phra Nang Cave Beach, a popular spot with soft sands, clear waters and impressive rocks.
One of its interesting features is Princess Cave, the place of offerings relating to local beliefs and traditions related to the sea.
Enjoy the beach and beautiful surroundings, take your time.
Afternoon – Choose an adventure
It’s not all about a relaxing time in Railay.
Rock climbing with a qualified instructor is recommended for those who like outdoor activities. This is a popular place for climbers to go and climb on the limestone cliffs.
Paddle around in a kayak or just walk among the little trails between the beaches.
If you are a more adventurous traveller, you may want to visit the Railay viewpoint, which provides a view of beautiful scenery but is steep and may be slippery. Use appropriate footwear and don’t try it in wet conditions.
Evening – Enjoy the sunset
Take some time to spend at Railay West before heading back to Ao Nang.
Please note that return boat services are dependable on operating times and the weather, please check in advance.
Day 3 – Four Islands: A tropical island adventure
It’s your last day – it’s sea’s day.
The Four Islands tour is one of the most popular excursions from Ao Nang. Typically Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Tup Island and Phra Nang Cave Beach.
Morning – Explore Koh Poda.
Set off on a boat ride to Koh Poda.
The island is famous for its beautiful sandy beach, its clear coastal waters and its impressive limestone landscape. Depending on the tour you may have time for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing.
Midday – See Chicken Island and Tup Island
Chicken Island has a rock formation that looks like a chicken’s head.
Tup Island is nearby and is known for its natural sandbar that can connect neighbouring islands at low tide. This natural phenomenon is known as Thale Waek (separated sea).
This is dependent on tide times so ask your tour operator first.
Afternoon – Return to Ao Nang
Come back after your island adventure to Ao Nang.
Take a last stroll to the beach or shop around or sit in a café.
On your final night, go to a beautiful restaurant, and try another sample of southern Thai cuisine.
This three-day Krabi itinerary offers a wonderful introduction to the destination, combining beautiful beaches, island scenery and delicious local food.
Four Days in Krabi: An in-land adventure.
If you have one day to spare, try to explore another part of Krabi.
I would suggest visiting Tiger Cave Temple and the Emerald Pool to travellers who spend 4 days in Krabi.
Day 4 – Tiger Cave Temple and Emerald Pool
Morning: Visit Tiger Cave Temple
Visit Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) early to experience its beauty.
This Buddhist temple is renowned for its tranquil and serene environment and its breathtaking views of the hills from its elevated location.
Over 1200 steps are needed to reach the top. Can be difficult, particularly in the tropics, so wear comfortable shoes, take plenty of water and plenty of breaks.
Once you get to the top you also get a view of the green landscape and limestone mountains of Krabi.
There is also another area of the lower temple that can be explored without the climb.
Afternoon – Explore the Emerald Pool
Go on towards the Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot).
This natural freshwater pool is hidden in a tropical forest and is well known for its beautiful green-blue colour.
It is a woodland walk heading towards the pool, where you can see the view and swim in certain areas.
Visit Klong Thom Hot Springs, if time permits. These natural warm-water pools are surrounded by tropical greenery and offer a relaxing end to an active day.
There are several attractions throughout the province so plan accordingly and don’t try to see it all in a short time.
Head back to Ao Nang for dinner and a much needed rest.
The Krabi 5-Day Itinerary: More islands and beautiful discoveries
Five days gives you more time to explore the coastline and enjoy another island adventure.
I suggest the Hong Islands to this krabi 5 day itinerary. Unlike the Four Islands, they are found with beautiful lagoons, beaches and limestone scenery.
Day 5 – Hong Islands: Discover a little paradise
Morning – Depart to head towards the islands
Enjoy a boat ride from Ao Nang to the Hong Islands.
These islands are famous for their beautiful beaches, clear waters and impressive limestone formations.
It’s a beautiful experience to travel along the way, and you will see the Andaman Sea and many of the islands around it.
Explore Hong Lagoon
One of the highlights is Hong Lagoon, a protected body of water, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs.
The green water and enclosed environment make it a stunning photo opportunity.
Tide and local conditions apply to boat access, be sure to follow your boat operator’s instructions.
Relax at Hong Island Beach
Bear right to the main beach and spend some time by the water.
You might be able to swim, snorkel or kayak during your excursion, depending on the one you are doing.
The beach is also a great spot to unwind and take in the tropical environment.
Afternoon – Return to Ao Nang
Once you’ve been on your island get back to the hotel.
Afterwards, take in a seafood supper, wander around the shops or indulge in a classic Thai massage.
For those who are going to stay in Krabi for 5 days, this is a nice way to conclude everything you want to see at Krabi.
The 7-Day Krabi Itinerary: A week to explore at your own pace
If you are planning to spend a whole week, then you have something special: a chance to enjoy the famous tourist spots and explore quieter areas of the province.
Add to the first 5 days above, these 2 experiences.
Day 6 – Klong Muang and Tubkaek: Discover the more relaxed coastlines
Morning – Enjoy Klong Muang Beach
Enjoy a relaxed morning on Klong Muang Beach after a few hectic days.
This coastal area is north of Ao Nang and is known for its tranquil ambiance, sand beach and scenic island vistas.
Look for a café on the beach, have breakfast or just take a stroll along the shore.
Afternoon – Discover Tubkaek Beach
Proceed on the beach towards Tubkaek Beach, another tranquil beach.
The beach has a special appeal because of the vistas over the offshore islands. A beautiful spot for a moment of rest and contemplation of the sea’s colours as they change.
For hiking enthusiasts, there is Khao Ngon Nak aka Dragon Crest Mountain.
The trail runs through forested areas and ends with views of the coast. It is a steep hike, so be sure to check trail access and weather conditions, wear the right footwear and bring extra water.
Evening – Enjoy a peaceful dinner
Head back to your hotel/hostel and enjoy a relaxing evening.
A serene evening at sunset is a nice break after a few days of island adventures.
Day 7 – Krabi Town: Discover local life and flavours
Morning – Explore the riverside
Take your last full day in Krabi Town.
Start at the Krabi river, where you can enjoy the sight of the famous limestone formations Khao Khanab Nam.
The two hills are one of the province’s most recognisable natural landmarks in the province.
A local trip on the river, and into nearby mangroves, is also an option.
Midday – Taste southern Thai food
Krabi has lots of great local food too!
Taste a sour and spicy southern Thai curry (gaeng som) or fragrant rice with chicken (khao mok gai). You can also enjoy fresh seafood, Tom Yum soup and traditional Thai noodles. If you love trying out local cuisine, inquire about local specialties, not just what you know.
Afternoon and evening – Explore the markets
Take time to do some shopping around Krabi Town’s shops and markets.
Maharaj Walking Street will be a great place to visit if they are open, which is typically from Friday to Sunday evenings. Local food, handmade and small souvenirs can be purchased.
Another choice for having local snacks at the evening is Chao Fah Pier Night Market.
Please check the days of operation before you arrive. Enjoy a delicious meal and enjoy the places you have discovered.
Best Time to Visit Krabi
Krabi has a tropical climate, characterized by warm weather all year around. But the weather and the sea state may influence your plans.
November to April – Generally drier weather
Typically, the best time to visit the beach and head off to the islands.
It’s especially busy in December, January and February.
When conditions are right, March and April may be hot but are still good times for coastal activities.
May to October – Rainy season
These months are when rainfall is more frequent and during this period stronger winds and rougher conditions may occur in the Andaman Sea.
But you can get to enjoy those sunny mornings and those peaceful beaches as well. Weather may preclude changing or canceling boat trips.
My tip is to be flexible on the islands you go on and to look at the marine forecast.
Where to Stay in Krabi
If you select the proper area you will make your holiday so much easier.
This is the best place for tourists who are visiting Ao Nang for the first time.
Ao Nang is a convenient location to stay, offering numerous lodging options, dining choices, and shops and boat transfers. A convenient option for visiting Railay and surrounding islands.
Railay – Perfect for a beach getaway!
If you want to be awaken by the tropical scenes and limestone cliffs, do not leave Railay. Keep in mind a boat transfer is required to get to the area.
Klong Muang – Best for a peaceful holiday.
Klong Muang is ideal for those who want to stay in resort style and enjoy a more relaxed environment. Some boat trips from Ao Nang are not as convenient, so please allow extra transport time.
If you are visiting for the first time, I suggest that you stay in Ao Nang. With 7 days, you can enjoy a different experience by staying at Railay or Klong Muang for the last two nights.
