The plane starts to descend. The Indian Ocean below you is a myriad shades of blue. Small islands seem like small green jewels, surrounded by white sand and blue waters. You’ve been dreaming about the villa, the snorkelling, the sunsets and that first walk on the beach without shoes on.

But this is an aspect of your Maldives holiday that isn’t exactly as glam as you might think and is just as crucial.

What do you do if it goes wrong?

A cancelled flight. A lost suitcase. A sudden illness. An incident while boating. Medical emergency on an isolated island away from Malé.

These are not things that anyone looks for when booking a Maldives holiday. But I, after years of observing the way travellers make plans for a holiday in an island, have learned one thing: The top holiday plans always have a plan B.

Maldives travel insurance is where it comes in.

Packed with information on what to expect, what cover is most important and what travellers from the UK should consider before coming to paradise this guide will explain everything.

Do you need travel insurance for the Maldives?

First off, let’s clear up one thing:

Travel insurance is not one of the requirements for tourists to enter Maldives as per the tourist regulations issued by Maldives Immigration. The tourist visa guidance at the moment concentrates on what is required on a tourist visa including the Traveller Declaration and needs to have a valid passport, confirmed return or onward travel, suitable accommodation and sufficient funds.

But, don’t ignore insurance.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCO) advises obtaining suitable travel insurance cover for the Maldives and that your policy should cover your planned activities, itinerary and emergency costs.

So, when someone looks up Maldives travel insurance requirements there are two points that we need to distinguish between.

Entry requirements: what is required to enter the country.

Practical protection: what you can do to financially protect yourself in case of the unexpected.

The second one is highly recommended for a relaxing holiday.

Why insurance matters more in the Maldives

The Maldives is not a single big island where everything is within easy reach.

The country consists of hundreds of islands, and you might have to hop on an international flight, a speedboat, an inplane, and/or an inplane transfer to one of the more remote resorts during your holiday.

That geography is a component of magic.

It can also complicate an emergency.

FCDO reports that medical facilities are inadequate, with only two hospitals – one in Malé and one in Hulhumalé – that are fully equipped. Several resort islands have medical facilities or access to doctors, but some are several hours away from medical attention.

That is why I don’t pay attention to the cost of a policy without seeing the entire policy.

When you’re taking out your flights, it may sound appealing to get the cheapest policy. However, when an emergency treatment is required, an ambulance, medical evacuation or home flight may be needed and the cheapest policy might not be the one that offers you the coverage you believed you had.

The best travel insurance for the Maldives is not necessarily the cheapest policy; it is the one that provides suitable cover for your trip.

What is the coverage for ‘Maldives travel insurance’?

Take time to reflect on your holidays throughout your holiday.

You’re not just going to fly to a beach. You may be on a remote island, on a boat, involved in snorkelling, diving, excursions, and have valuable items with you.

It’s important to review your policy more carefully and look for the following.

1. Emergency medical expenses

This is the big one!

Your policy should offer extensive coverage for medical emergencies overseas. Be sure to see the maximum amount, not take it for granted that “medical cover included” means it is covered.

The FCDO recommends having appropriate travel insurance for local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation.

2. Medical evacuation and repatriation

This is especially true in the Maldives.

Should you fall seriously ill on a remote island, you may need to be transferred to a more fully equipped medical facility. In serious cases, it is also possible that you will need to go back to the UK for additional treatment.

Always check, since medical transport may not be covered even when medical expenses are covered.

Review the policy for emergency evacuation and repatriation.

3. Canceling and shortening a trip

Suppose you could have spent thousands of pounds on flights, a holiday resort and transfers; but the holiday was ruined by a serious covered event?

Cancellation cover will assist to cover prepaid, non-refundable holiday costs if the cancellation is covered by your policy.

Likewise, if insured event requires early return to home, ask if policy provides for early cut short trip.

Please check the list of covered reasons. Cancellation cover does not imply cancellation for any reason.

4. Delay or failure to connect flights

A Maldives holiday can involve several stages of travel.

Depending on your itinerary, you may travel from the UK to a regional airport before taking a domestic flight, seaplane or speedboat to your resort.

Sometimes the delay during the initial part of the journey can have a domino effect.

Find out if your policy offers cover for missed connections and/or travel disruption – and what the conditions are.

5. Items lost, stolen or damaged

A camera, a mobile phone and a passport and suitcases can cost a lot to replace.

Review your policy on baggage and personal belongings and look for the following:

The overall weight limit for bags allowed on the aircraft.

  • The single-item limit
  • Valuables limits
  • Excess payments

For unsupervised items:

If theft occurs, the following information will need to be reported.

When you’re travelling with a high-priced camera or jewelry, you cannot take for granted that the standard will cover the entire cost of the item.

What about water sports, snorkelling, diving?

On to the fun part.

Underwater activities are a major draw on the Maldives and snorkelling or diving is a significant highlight of a Maldivian holiday for many visitors.

However, water activities can alter the coverage of your insurance.

Some policies may cover parts of the recreation activities, others may cover specific sports activities under conditions, such as depth, equipment or certification, or whether the activity is organised by a recognised provider.

Therefore if you are travelling to dive, please check the sports and activities section before you book your trip.

The same applies to jet skis, parasail, surfing and other activities.

Don’t presume that an activity that is available at your resort is also insured under your policy.

Your policy should be consistent with your holiday.

Pre-existing medical conditions: read this carefully

This is one area that travellers should never take a chance.

Before buying a policy, check the insurer’s terms if you have a pre-existing medical condition, take regular medication, or are undergoing tests or treatment.

If you are travelling with a medical condition or if needed, current tests or treatment, the FCDO advises travellers to declare any relevant pre-existing medical conditions to their insurer.

It is far better to take a bit of extra time to answer medical questions truthfully prior to your trip than find a problem after making a claim.

Does travel insurance cover bad weather in the Maldives?

That’s where the fine print comes into play.

The weather is tropical in the Maldives and conditions can impact flights, boats and excursions.

But a policy doesn’t guarantee you’ll be protected from all weather-related inconveniences.

For instance, there could be regulations on delays or cancellations, natural events or transport disruption. Some benefits only apply after a certain delay period or when particular conditions are met.

Please verify carefully your policy about:

  • Flight delays
  • Flight cancellations
  • Missed connections
  • Severe weather
  • Natural disasters
  • Resort closure
  • Alternative accommodation

If a word such as “weather” is found anywhere in the summary, do not purchase the policy.

Read the actual conditions.

How much does Maldives travel insurance cost?

There is no fixed price for Maldives travel insurance.

Your premium may vary depending on your age, travel duration, travel destinations, activities, medical history, type of cover and single-trip or annual insurance policy.

The need for insurance for a one-week luxury resort holiday might differ from that of a longer stay on the islands.

That is why I wouldn’t pick a policy simply because it is the lowest cost policy.

Instead, compare: Excess & Exclusions → Activities → Cancellation → Evacuation → Medical cover → Price

This sequence can save you a lot of money.

Travel insurance Maldives: what should UK travellers check?

If travelling from the UK, please visit the GOV.UK – Maldives Travel Advice website for the latest advice before travelling. This advice may be updated, especially if there is more extensive cross-border travel disruption which could impact on flight routes or connections.

I also suggest storing your insurer’s emergency contact information in an easily-accessed place.

Don’t leave any items in your checked luggage.

Store your policy number, emergency assistance number and other important travel documents in your phone and preferably also on a back-up copy.

If you must receive medical care, get in touch with your insurance provider as soon as feasible and adhere to their directions. The FCDO states that travellers should promptly seek assistance from their insurance company if they are referred to a medical facility.

Maldives travel insurance requirements: what should you carry?

Although travel insurance is not listed as a standard tourist entry requirement, it is sensible to carry your policy details with you.

Keep:

  • Your policy certificate
  • Policy number
  • Emergency line telephone number
  • Details of medical cover
  • Emergency evacuation information
  • Important medical information, if relevant
  • Copies of key travel documents

However, if an event does occur, being prepared can help make the situation easier to handle.

A little Maldives planning can prevent a lot of stress

Insurance is one of the various components of preparation.

Take some time before the flight to review your Maldives travel guide again and ensure all your travel arrangements, travel documents, accommodation and transfers are ready to go.

However, before you travel to the Maldives, it is a good idea to also look at the Maldives Travel Advice document, which will be updated with the latest travel information, especially if you are likely to travel through a different country.

If you have plans for the flight from Britain, find yours in advance looking at Flight to Maldives from UK. The start of your island getaway can be a lot less stressful with a smoother connection.

Planning the holidays in the Maldives in conjunction with the accommodation and transfers can also help those who are looking to keep their holiday costs down to aminimum, ensure they plan a realistic Maldives on a Budget holiday without sacrificing insurance coverage where it is needed.

My Maldives insurance checklist before you fly

This is the easy one I am likely to carry with my passport:

  • High level coverage paid for medical costs
  • Emergency medical evacuation included
  • Medical repatriation to the UK included
  • Cancellation cover checked
  • Curtailment cover checked
  • Baggage and valuables counted
  • Water sports and planned activities addressed
  • Existing conditions stated (where applicable)
  • Policy excess understood
  • Important exclusions read
  • Insurer’s emergency number saved
  • A copy of the policy documents is available off-line.

It is a simple process and does not require a lot of time.

A little preparation can go a long way toward providing you with peace of mind — something more valuable than a cheap policy.

The Maldives is a dream destination

A Maldives holiday is a wonderfully carefree holiday. Morning comes with the sound of the sea. You walk barefoot. You see fish below the jetty. You have forgotten the day.

I will make you feel like that. However, the responsible travel isn’t about expecting problems. It’s the knowledge that if it does happen, you are prepared for it.

Travel insurance is not listed as a standard entry requirement for tourists, but that does not make it unimportant. The right policy can help protect you against unexpected medical costs, evacuation, cancellation, disruption and other covered events.

For my part, the simplest way is to just pick the right cover for your trip, get a feel for what it covers and be sure that medical emergencies, evacuation, cancelation and activities you’re going to enjoy are covered.

Then shut down the laptop, give up your passport and get ready to get excited. When the arrangement details have been sorted out, there is just one thing remaining.

Run to your slice of paradise and embrace those ultimate world holiday vibes.

FAQ

1. Is travel insurance mandatory for entry into the Maldives?

It is not required to enter the Maldives but highly recommended by the FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office) with regards to insurance.

2. Does cheap travel insurance cover emergency medical evacuation?

Not necessarily. Some cheap policies don’t often cover medical evacuation, and that can run into thousands of dollars when on a distant island. Don’t assume, read the small print.

3. Does snorkelling and water sports come under default?

Not always. Some common policies limit activities by depth, equipment or certification. Sports add-ons will need to be verified prior to booking.

4. If I don’t tell the insurance provider about medical condition, will I still be covered?

No. If you don’t tell about any pre-existing ailments, your policy can be completely compromised when you make a claim.

5. Does travel insurance protect travellers from delays due to bad weather?

Under certain circumstances. Claims typically involve a minimum delay period or a significant disruption; check your policy’s disruption clause.
