There’s nothing better than a fragrant tuna curry with the Indian Ocean waves gently swaying by your side. Now throw in some coconut rice, fresh tropical fruit and the soft island breeze and your meal will be a one you’ll remember well after your holiday.

Welcome dear travellers to the tasty side of Maldives.

When it comes to the Maldives, food can be one of the most simple aspects of a Muslim traveller’s holiday, but there’s one thing to be aware of. Not all local inhabited islands and private resort islands are alike.

The Maldives is a Muslim country and hence the traditional Maldivian food is naturally based on fish, coconut, rice and spices. However, there are many resort islands that work differently to local communities and may offer alcoholic drinks and non halal food items as well as the halal items.

Thus, is Maldives food halal? In many local contexts, it’s really a delight to find halal foods. However, it’s advisable to confirm the resort’s food policies before booking at resorts.

This is a guide to help you know your way around what to expect, what to eat and how to enjoy the Maldives with confidence.

Is Maldives Food Halal?

Yes, it is easy to find Maldives halal food in general, especially on inhabited local islands.

Seafood, rice, coconut and locally grown spices are the strong pillars of the traditional Maldivian cooking. Tuna is particularly significant and is used in all sorts of dishes including curries, breakfast dishes, and snacks.

In local islands restaurants and guesthouses serve the Muslim community and alcohol is not served in the same way as on private resort islands. Alcohol is not permitted on inhabited local islands, while licensed resorts can serve alcohol to tourists.

However, travellers get confused here.

Local islands vs resort islands

The Maldives is a special tourist destination. Numerous resorts are on private islands, away from the inhabited islands where the Maldivians live.

In a local island, it’s typically easy to eat halal.

When it comes to a resort island, the situation could be different. Alcohol is allowed in some international resorts, and they may even have pork or other non-halal items for international tourists. While halal food may still be available, there can be differences in the degree of separation, sourcing and certification between properties.

This is why I suggest you ask a few simple questions of your resort before booking your trip, instead of taking anything for granted when it comes to food policy at the resort.

Why Is Maldivian Food Naturally Halal-Friendly?

The beauty of dining in Maldives is that it’s all very simple!

There are lots of:

  • Fresh tuna and other seafood
  • Rice
  • Coconut
  • Chilli
  • Lime
  • Curry leaves
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Local spices
  • Tropical fruits
  • Vegetables

The seafood is the main attraction of the Maldivian menu. Tuna is especially an integral part of daily life on the islands.

This means that even if you didn’t intend to order a dish specifically labelled as halal, you will often find dishes based on fish, rice, vegetables and coconut, which can make finding halal-friendly meals easier.

However, do not forget about sauces, marinades and cooking methods when eating at international resorts. For those who do observe a strict Halal diet, it seems logical to inquire about the source and preparation of meat.

10 Maldivian Foods Muslim Travellers Should Try

If you’re travelling to the Maldives, don’t indulge in the same cuisine you’re used to at home throughout your entire trip.

Local cuisine is a part of the adventure.

1. Mas Huni

Start your morning with one of the Maldives’ best-known traditional breakfasts.

A popular Maldivian breakfast dish, mas huni is a shredded tuna and coconut dish with onion and chilli. It’s usually a favourite accompaniment to a flatbread like roshi.

Fresh, savoury, slightly spicy and with the island character.

2. Garudhiya

If you’re looking for an authentic Maldivian dish, have a bite of garudhiya.

Traditional fish broth, which is typically prepared from tuna, and served with rice, lime, chilli and other ingredients. It is light not heavy, which lets the flavour of the fish shine through.

3. Mas Riha

Mas riha is an aromatic fish curry from the Maldives.

Tuna is cooked in coconut milk and spices and served as a comforting curry with rice or roshi.

This is a dish not to be missed if you are a fan of South Asian flavours.

4. Fihunu Mas

Looking for a bit more spice?

Fihunu mas is rubbed with a spicy mixture and then grilled fish. It is smoky, fiery and delicious, too.

It is especially fun after a day out in the water swimming or snorkelling.

5. Bis Keemiya

This is like Maldivian savoury pastry.

Ingredients like tuna, onion and egg are added to bis keemiya which are then folded and fried till crisp.

A perfect snack between the islands.

6. Gulha

Gulha are small, savoury fried pastry balls filled with a tuna mixture.

They are great if you’re looking to sample a variety of local dishes without ordering the whole meal.

7. Rihaakuru

Traditional thick fish paste, which is created from concentrated fish broth.

It has a strong, salty taste, so it’s not my first recommendation to anyone! For the foodies who like to take risks, it gives them a good idea of the traditional style of Maldivian cooking.

8. Maldivian Fish Curry

Fish curry is a great place to experience the local cuisine of the islands.

Tuna, coconut and aromatic spices come together to create a flavourful and comforting meal.

9. Coconut Rice

Rice is an integral part of Maldivian dishes and coconut provides a subtle sweetness and creaminess.

Serve with fish curry for a delicious fish meal in the tropics.

10. Tropical Fruits

Allow space for fruits.

After a spicy meal or a long afternoon in the sun, papaya, pineapple, banana, watermelon and coconut make a refreshing choice.

Where Can You Find Halal Food in the Maldives?

There are three options, local islands, Malé and resort islands.

Local islands

If you’re looking for a more traditional halal meal, travel the local islands is a great option.

Maldivian food is available at guesthouses and local restaurants for a much more affordable price than in a private-island resort. When planning their stay, visitors to the Maldives can use the Maldives Ministry of Tourism – Registered Facilities guesthouses and hotels register kept by the Ministry of Tourism, which lists all the functioning properties in the Maldives.

Inhabited islands like Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah and other inhabited islands offer opportunities to experience local food culture along with local life.

Malé

Don’t neglect Malé.

The capital is one of the best places to taste Maldivian cuisine aside from the resort type. No need to travel to a faraway island to find local restaurants, cafés and traditional dishes.

Also, a good place to eat local food before or after a transfer to a resort.

Private resorts

This is where some research is required.

Halal meat or seafood is available in many of the resorts, but the policies vary. Some resorts may source halal-certified meat or have dedicated preparation areas, while others may provide halal dishes on request.

Muslim travellers are drawn to the Maldives for its cuisine and drink, and the official Visit Maldives tourism site is no exception, it includes a special feature on the cuisine and drinking water that is available to Muslim tourists.

If the requirement is strict halal, please contact the resort prior to booking and inquire:

  • Is all meat halal-certified?
  • Which restaurants serve halal food?
  • Is the kitchen shared with non-halal food?
  • Is pork served anywhere on the island?
  • Are separate utensils or preparation areas used?
  • Can halal meals be arranged throughout the stay?
  • Can alcohol be removed from the minibar?

You can find these answers prior to travelling and have significantly more peace of mind.

Maldives Food Halal Tips for Resort Holidays

My single best tip is to never make a decision about the food policy of a resort based solely on the country being Muslim.

A resort island is a tourist setting based on a set of operational rules.

In some properties there might be large selection of Maldives halal food, some properties might have halal and non-halal food. There are numerous resorts, hotels and guesthouses listed under the Ministry of Tourism throughout the country, so of course policies will differ from resort to resort.

If you need strict halal assurance, seek out information about:

Halal sourcing: Inquire on meat sources and if they are suppliers certified by halal authorities.

Kitchen separation: Check if there is a separation in the kitchen between halal and non-halal food.

Pork: See if pork products are served on the premises.

Alcohol: If not drinking alcohol is essential to you, be sure to find out if there are designated restaurants, or if the island is entirely alcohol-free.

Breakfast: This is particularly important. Some international breakfast buffets include bacon, ham and more, which may be problematic for people with allergies, so inquire about what is available.

Can Muslim Travellers Enjoy an Alcohol-Free Holiday?

Yes, but it’s important what lodging you select.

If you’re looking for alcohol-free areas, then you’ll find local inhabited islands much more suitable. Alcohol may be sold on resort islands, depending on the nature of the resort’s amenities and tourism activities.

There are also initiatives that are targeted at halal tourism. The recent planning documents by the Maldivian government outline the concept of halal tourism, including alcohol-free and pork-free islands, and food and facilities that are halal certified or demonstrated to be halal compliant, meeting the needs of Muslim tourists.

The Maldives isn’t just a place where Muslim visitors can get their Maldives halal food fix. It’s also working on more specific halal-friendly tourism products.

How Much Does Halal Food Cost in the Maldives?

The cost of food items can differ significantly from one restaurant to the next.

Generally, a local island restaurant is a lot cheaper than a resort restaurant in luxury. One of the things that can eat up a lot of your time on holiday and money as well isresort dining, especially when you aren’t covered in your package and you get to eat separately.

For a better understanding of what you may spend, look at our Maldives Food Prices guide before travelling.

When keeping costs down is a priority, it can have a significant impact on eating some meals on the local islands.

My Favourite Way to Experience Maldivian Food

If I’m asked what I wish people did when travelling to the Maldives to make their holiday more memorable, it is not to eat all their meals at the resort buffet.

Experiment with combining the two experiences.

Have a gorgeous resort breakfast with a view of the lagoon. Have a local Maldivian lunch on an inhabited island. Have traditional tuna curry for dinner at night. Mornings are the perfect time to try mas huni. Collect some gulha throughout the day.

Food becomes more than something you eat, it becomes part of the story you take home.

Check our Maldivian food guide for additional dishes, flavours and eating ideas.

If you want to find out more about traditional dishes to include in your holiday shopping list, you can even return to our Maldivian food guide to do so.

Is Maldives Food Halal for Strictly Observant Travellers?

It’s where I had always recommended to be careful.

Is the food produced in Maldives Halal? In the local community, the halal food is a part of everyday dining. However, if you are booking a private resort, it is important to check the information directly from your property of choice.

If you are looking for no pork, no alcohol, no cross-contamination, and no pork, then don’t use a blanket statement of “halal food available”.

Ask specific questions. You can make your holiday a lot more enjoyable with that little extra step.

A Taste of the Maldives You Should Not Miss

Beauty of Maldivian cuisine is that it doesn’t do too much.

It’s based on what the islands always had: fish from the sea, coconut from the palms, rice, chilli, lime and warm spices. Maybe that’s what makes it so memorable.

After all, lying by that turquoise lagoon, surrounded by the smell of freshly cooked fish and coconut, is quite enjoyable. What you see is an eye-catcher, but what you eat is a place marker.

When you think of the Maldives, don’t picture only overwater villas and flawless sunsets. The country’s food offers another way to experience island life!

Imagine the fish curry is bubbling hot on a plate. A large scoop of coconut rice. A grill-ready tuna fire. First taste of island life and that.

Further tips for planning trips to the Maldives are available in our Maldives Travel Guide, while our Maldives Culture Guide explains the traditions, customs and everyday life in the Maldives.

While the Maldives could seem like a paradise from the outside, once you begin eating Maldivian cuisine, you will discover the islands in a different light with real world holiday vibes.
