These are the months when you can see animals around permanent water and it’s when the vegetation is thinner.

October to March: the off-season safari season.

This is the time that many people envision when they think about going on an African safari – golden grass, blue skies and cold mornings. Often the bush is more open and wildlife easier to see, and the weather is cooler, which makes long drives more comfortable.

The downside is that some animals will be more difficult to see in thicker plant life. For those who appreciate landscapes, birds and the feel of an African summer, this season can be equally special.

My advice for choosing your dates

If you are visiting for the first time, and you are looking to get a good chance at the Big 5, I’d say May to September would be your best bet. October to March are ideal for those who enjoy greenery, less traffic and the wonders of the rainy season. No month is perfect for everyone—it will be up to you to decide which month is ideal for you.

Kruger self drive: freedom on your terms

One of the most enjoyable ways to explore the park is with a ‘Kruger self drive’ safari. Your speed, route and the duration of each stop are up to you. You can depart early or stop at a waterhole or go back to a favourite spot in the day.

It’s also a great option for those who prefer self-dependence when traveling. SANParks’ tarred and gravel roads are open to visitors, who can explore the park in their own cars. Entering through one of the designated Kruger National Park – Entrance Gates gives you immediate access to this network of roads and the freedom to start your journey smoothly.

It is also advisable to always check for up-to-date sightings at camps and obey the rules of the park, which are enforced by SANParks.

Above all, don’t overlook a sighting. Stop safely and enjoy what you see if there’s something interesting around. A few moments spent watching an elephant family can be more rewarding than simply ticking animals off a list.

Guided drives: exploring the bush in a new way.

Guided game drives are a great thing to do if you just want to sit back, relax and let someone else drive the vehicle. SANParks also provide drives throughout the day, subject to availability and on request, as well as morning drives, sunset drives and night drives.

Morning drives

The morning drives start earlier than the actual opening times so that guests can enjoy the bush in the early morning. Typically, these drives are about 3 or 3 ½ hours long and are a great way to get the day going.

Sunset drives

My favourite times in the bush are at sunset. The sun dims, the temperature drops and the animals start to stir. Sunset drives typically run for about three hours and come back after dark.

Night drives

Night drives are so different. They are the only means to catch sight of some of the nocturnal animals of the park after the gates have shut, and can capture animals and animal activity that might otherwise be overlooked during the day.

Where to stay in Kruger

A main advantage of staying in Kruger is the range of accommodation options. You can camp in public rest camps or opt for a more private lodge experience or a combination of both for a more diverse trip. There are many accommodation choices offered by SANParks, from the main rest camps, to bushveld camps and bush lodges.

Public rest camps

Rest camps are great for anyone who prefers a more independent safari tour. They make for a convenient starting point for self-drive trips and can help you explore the park at your own speed.

Private lodges

Private lodges provide a more exclusive experience, and may provide guided drives, comfortable lodging, and a greater emphasis on relaxation. They may be an excellent option for those traveling who wish to experience wildlife and luxury.

My recommendation

I do suggest rest camps for a first visit and a private lodge if you have the funds. This gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, while a private lodge can offer the comfort and convenience of guided safari activities.

How long should you spend in Kruger?

If this is your first time, three to four nights would be recommended, and five to seven nights if you will have the time.

Though it may not be as rewarding as a longer stay, it is much better in the wonderful park of the Kruger when you have the time and space to pace yourself. It’s not necessary to see everything. Indeed, attempting to see too much may result in rushed trip.

The longer stay allows you to visit various areas, ride around both in the morning and the evening and enjoy the natural rhythm of the bush.

Day 1: Arrive and settle into the bush

Go to your desired camp or lodge, get settled and make your first drive. If you are only able to see a few animals, then you are still in the park.

Day 2: Early morning wildlife drive.

Early and enjoy the cool morning air. Enjoy the day exploring, visiting water holes, picnic areas and then returning to camp for a relaxed afternoon.

Day 3: A different side of Kruger

Take another walk or visit another part of the park. If possible add a sunset or drive at night, and experience the bush after dark.

Day 4: A more leisurely safari morning.

Take your time. Return to your favourite water hole, have a leisurely breakfast and maximise your time in the park.

This sort of itinerary has a balance of wildlife, relaxation and discovery without trying too hard.

What to pack for your safari

It is very important to be comfortable and prepared for a Kruger National Park safari.

Light, breathable clothing for warm days.
Warm layer for early morning and evening drives.
Comfortable walking shoes.
Sun protection, including a hat and sunglasses.
Binoculars for watching animals and birds.
Extra batteries or a Power Bank for the camera.
Insect repellent.
A water bottle that can be used more than once (reusable).
A small day bag for essential items.
