Thankfully, this does not have to be a complicated part of your holiday. Tourists do not need to apply for a visa in advance. A 30-day tourist visa is granted on arrival, provided the traveller meets the entry requirements. But there are a few important entry requirements that need to be attended to before you embark.

A little information that I always check before travelling is my passport’s expiration date.

Currently, the Maldives has a minimum requirement of one month validity on a passport. It also clarifies that the validity extension will not be accepted as an alternative to the required validity.

So don’t simply look at your flight date. Look at the date the passport expires on the page of your passport.

What is Maldives visa on arrival?

The Maldives visa on arrival is aimed at facilitating the tourist entry.

Normally, it is not necessary to go to the Maldivian embassy first to get a tourist visa for a regular holiday or holiday.

However, receiving a visa on arrival does not guarantee entry. Your eligibility will be assessed when you arrive in the Maldives.

This means you don’t have to get a standard type visa, but simply ensure that your documents and arrangements are in order for your holiday.

Think of it this way:

Your visa might be granted at arrival, but your preparation must be done before arrival.

How long can you stay in the Maldives?

The immigration regulations allow foreigners to stay for a maximum of 30 days from the day of their arrival on the Maldives without paying any visa fee. The law also provides for an extended period of stay (up to 90 days) with the payment of the appropriate fee and approval of the immigration authorities.

For most holidaymakers, the 30-day visa is more than enough.

A week at a private island resort can seem a very leisurely time. Take a few nights on a local island, a diving adventure or a little island hopping and you have a whole lot of different Maldives experiences without having to stay in the islands for too long.

Don’t just presume you will be able to stay when you are not allowed.

Further, Maldives Immigration has taken steps to simplify the tourist visa extension process from April 2026, where certain information is now pre-populated in its digital platform.

Do UK travellers need a visa for the Maldives?

The key factor to consider is that those who are travelling to the Maldives on a British passport for a holiday usually do not have to go through the tourist visa process prior to their trip.

Tourists obtain the appropriate tourist visa on arrival, provided that they meet the entry requirements.

I wouldn’t consider the Maldives to be a totally “visa-free” country for residents of the United Kingdom. The following statement may be confusing.

Please still require the proper passport, travel arrangements and Traveller Declaration.

When asked by someone, “do I need a visa for Maldives if I’m travelling from the UK?”, my answer will be:

No pre-arranging required for a tourist visa, but entry requirements must be met upon arrival in the Maldives.

Please always refer to the most up-to-date official guidance before making a booking or travelling as immigration procedures can change.

What is the Traveller Declaration?

This is the most important thing to get right.

The Traveller Declaration is an online declaration that needs to be filled out by travellers coming to the Maldives. It is submitted via the official IMUGA portal.

Can be finished up to 96 hours (4 days) prior to your arrival. The declaration is free of charge.

As a reminder…

A third party website is not a place for you to pay for it to be filled out for you.

Maldives Immigration explicitly mentions that the Traveller Declaration will be free and must be filed on the official IMUGA portal. It has also issued warnings to travellers of unofficial websites charging fees for this service.

What do I need at the airport?

To ensure a smoother trip, put your important papers in a well-organised place instead of in the suitcase.

I recommend you have these handy:

Passport
Ensure that it is valid for at least one month and has a machine-readable zone.
Return ticket or onward flight ticket.
Have confirmation of your return flight or onward journey available if requested by immigration

Accommodation confirmation

Your prepaid booking should be with a registered accommodation provider.

Traveller Declaration

Do this using IMUGA prior to arrival and within the allotted time.

Proof of sufficient funds for your stay, if requested.

Unless you have an accepted sponsorship arrangement, you should be prepared to show you have enough money to stay in the country.

The preparation only requires a minute or two and can help make your arrival feel a lot calmer.

What if I am staying on a local island?

That’s where a bit of knowledge about the Maldives can come in handy.

You don’t need to be at a luxury resort on its own island. Depending on travellers’ plans, they may also stay in registered guesthouses on local islands.

The important thing to remember about immigration is that you will need to have a confirmed prepaid booking with a registered facility as part of your travel arrangements.

Does a Maldives visa on arrival mean everyone gets in?

Not automatically.

This is a key one that a lot of travel guides pass over in a hurry.

A Maldives visa on arrival is not an entry visa.

What if I am travelling for work and not holiday?

This is where the rules become different.

The tourist visa is for those who are coming to the Maldives for tourism purposes. In some cases, you might need a visa or permission for a different reason, such as employment, business, residence, family or for a specific purpose.

Maldives Immigration offers various kinds of visas like Business, Work, Dependent, Resident, Marriage and Meeting.

If you are travelling for work, business, residence or another non-tourism purpose, you should check the relevant visa or permit requirements with Maldives Immigration. But if it’s a normal holiday, it’s the tourist route that is most needed by travellers.

Do children need their own passport? Yes.

Maldives Immigration says children and minors are required to have their own passport to enter the Maldives.

If travelling with family, inspect each of their passports in detail and don’t assume that children’s passports are issued in the same way as an adult’s.

This is particularly worth considering in a family holiday with multiple connecting flights.

How tough is visa procedure in Maldives?

For a typical holiday, it is one of the easier things to plan a trip to the Maldives.

Don’t store your suitcase in the filing cabinet!
