What if the next time you swam in the Maldives, the shadow you could see silently moving under you was actually a whale shark?
At one time, you might be above a multi-coloured reef, watching as small fish swim amongst the coral. The second, the blue doorway opens up and a giant, spotted “thing” moves toward you. No roars, no rush and no drama. A gentle giant glides through the Indian Ocean, completely unhurried.
Welcome, dear travellers, to one of the most memorable marine experiences in the Maldives.
If you had a whale shark-related vacation dream that’s been resting quietly on your travel wish list then knowing the Maldives whale shark season can help you plan your vacation around the best conditions. The good news is that the Maldives is unlike many whale shark locations: whale sharks are found in South Ari Atoll year-round, and are most plentiful in the area from August through November.
Thus, when should you go? Where will you be staying? Can you swim with a whale shark? What can you expect from a whale shark tour in the Maldives?
Let’s dive in.
When is whale shark season in the Maldives?
Yes, but not as you would imagine.
The whale shark season Maldives that tourists look forward to is not a brief period that these giant sharks show up. One of the few areas where whale sharks can be seen year round is in South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA).
If whale shark sightings are a primary attraction of your Maldives holiday, however, there is a better time.
Whale sharks are observed at higher frequencies in South Ari from August to November. Do not exclude the other months just because. Part of the magic is when a whale shark shows up when you least expect it. South Ari is an excellent choice for an encounter in any month of the year.
This is a big part of the reason I always tell tourists that encounters with whale sharks are not something that should be planned like a date on the calendar. The ocean doesn’t get holidays.
Best Time to See Whale Sharks in the Maldives
August to November is the best time to see whale sharks in the Maldives, particularly in South Ari Atoll.
The waters around South Ari have the potential to draw more whale sharks during this time. What makes this area special is that the sharks are not just transiting through for a short time during a season. South Ari is known for its year-round whale shark presence, with higher concentrations generally observed between August and November.
However, there’s something else to consider.
A peak season does not guarantee a sighting.
Whale sharks are wild animals. They have the liberty to swim away, dive deeper or turn around as they please. No responsible tour operator will guarantee you will have a day to swim with one.
True, the uncertainty makes it more exciting, but why?
You’re not in an aquarium. You are going into the ocean on their terms.
South Ari Atoll My Top Pick
South Ari Atoll is definitely worth considering if whale shark swimming is a top item on your Maldives bucket list.
The South Ari marine protected area (SAMPA) covers a vast expanse of sea and is one of the world’s most famous whale shark hotspots. According to the official tourism information for Maldives, it is a place of aggregation throughout the year.
Various islands offer entry to this section of the Maldives, such as Dhigurah, Dhidhdhoo, Maamigili and Fenfushi.
Of these, the Dhigurah intrigues visitors looking for more than a resort experience. It provides an opportunity to enjoy a local-island experience and marine adventures.
Another plus with South Ari is that there’s no need to pick between whale shark or extensive dive.
Search for whale sharks in the morning, discover colourful reefs in the afternoon and relax on the beach in the evening.
My Maldives diving guide is also a must read before planning your underwater activities for those who want to delve deeper into the country’s marine side.
What Makes South Ari So Special?
What’s going on under the surface here is fascinating.
Studies in South Ari have revealed that the region is the home of young male whale sharks, and the same sharks are often seen again. The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme has documented hundreds of individuals to provide information on whale shark movement and behaviour.
It is also influenced by the surrounding ocean situation. Great feeding conditions can occur where there are nutrient-rich waters and deep areas near the reef. Whale sharks can also change depth so that, at times, they are found near the surface.
This is what distinguishes a whale shark tour Maldives from merely searching for a big animal in the sea.
You’re about to enter a living ecosystem.
For a minute, you may be surrounded by only blue water. Then, your guide sees something in the distance. Everyone becomes quiet. Fins start moving. Then a whale shark shows up!
Best Months for Whale Sharks in Maldives
A major error made by all visitors is to assume that whale shark viewing is over in November.
It does not. Whale Shark sightings can be made year round in South Ari.
If you’re visiting the Maldives in the months December to July, then don’t discount the possibility of encountering a whale shark.
Instead, head to an area known for its sightings and discuss the latest sightings with local guides.
Another interesting place is Fuvahmulah, Atoll of Gnaviyani. Throughout the year, whale sharks are recorded there, although with different probability depending on the time of year. The area has been reported to have seen large size female whale sharks unlike the typical juvenile predominantly male population seen in South Ari.
There is also Baa Atoll. Hanifaru Bay is of special significance when the conditions are ideal for plankton, which bring whale sharks and manta rays to the area, between approximately May/June and October/November.
This may be particularly exciting if you like both animals. For more information on the timing you can check out my Manta Ray Season in Maldives guide.
What Is a Whale Shark Tour Like?
The typical whale shark tour Maldives starts with a transfer from the resort to the island you are taking the tour from.
Your crew will be looking for whale sharks in areas they are known to have been spotted. These are not fixed attractions and may move to different spots.
Once a shark is seen, your guide will let you know when and how to get in the water. And this is where I recommend slowing down.
Don’t go into the sea just because everyone else is going. Take a breath. Look at the animal. Let it come into view.
Whale Shark is surprisingly tame. It can sometimes slip by and have its mouth open filtering out minute organisms in the water. It’s massive body can make you feel very small, but the experience can be very calm.
For many people on a vacation the most beautiful time is not swimming next to the shark. It’s seeing it fade away in the blue.
Swim Beside Giants in the Maldives
Swimming and snorkelling with whale sharks is possible in suitable areas, but can never be done irresponsibly.
Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme advises that it is best to maintain a respectful distance from the Whale Shark, not to touch it, and never block its way. Visit Maldives suggests keeping a distance of 3-4 metres from the shark, depending on your location to him.
Here is a basic guideline to keep in mind:
- Let the whale shark be the judge of distance.
- If it swims towards you, do not reach out.
- Don’t run away from it if it backs away.
- Let it go if it dives.
- Do not swim across the top or in the path of its movement. Flash photography should also be ruled out.
- It’s not about getting a photo as close as possible.
The idea is to try and get a sighting that does not disturb the animal at all.
Choose Your Underwater Adventure
You do not need to be an experienced diver to enjoy a whale shark encounter.
If you’re interested in these animals, snorkelling can be a great opportunity to see them since many animals are found near the surface.
For confident swimmers, snorkelling is an option, where you can swim quietly as the whale shark floats by.
For divers, on the other hand, the combination of the experience with the stunningly beautiful reef sites and underwater scenery of the Maldives may be preferable.
So if you’re about to embark on your first scuba dives, check out my Maldives Diving Guide before you book your Maldives holiday. It can help you understand what you can expect during diving, marine life and types of dive experiences.
But if you are already an advanced underwater skier, perhaps the whale shark meeting is the highlight you will remember from your typical reef dives.
How to Choose the Right Month
Here is a way to think about it choosing the Best Time to Visit Maldives:
August to November:
If you’re primarily interested in whale sharks, then your best time to visit South Ari is during its peak season. These months are normally when higher concentrations are found.
May/June to October/November:
Baa Atoll is of special interest because it is an area with abundant plankton that can attract whale sharks and manta rays around Hanifaru Bay.
December to July:
Don’t dismiss South Ari! Whale sharks are found year-round but not always. Therefore, if you are looking for the best time to see whale sharks Maldives, keep in mind that it is not only a matter of the month, you can find them in different parts of the Maldives too.
How to Make Your Encounter More Special
As a whale shark enthusiast, I can tell you that seeing the largest fish in the water is actually not the most memorable part of a whale shark trip.
It’s the right way to do it.
Stay in a location that is convenient to a known whale shark location. Check the resort or local guesthouse for recent sightings as well as older photos. Select guides who will give an explanation of responsible wildlife behavior prior to entering the water.
Plan for some flexibility.
Plan for at least two opportunities to join a whale shark trip. Calm sea and no sighting one day may bring another. Another one might provide you with the encounter you’ve been hoping for for years.
As you can see, there’s beauty in wildlife travel. The sea dictates the time.
You can also read my Diving in Maldives guide to find some more advice on planning your underwater excursion prior to your trip.
Why Responsible Whale Shark Tourism Matters
Close encounters are very exciting but these animals need space.
Vessel collisions, entanglement, bycatch and other human activities, including habitat destruction and degradation, threaten whale sharks. Studies also have identified issues of disturbance in a highly touristy environment.
The Maldives has implemented conservation measures, such as increased awareness of boat safety and propeller protection around whale shark areas.
We, as travellers, have a responsibility too. Select operators that take care of wildlife. Follow the instructions of your guide. Keep your distance. Avoid handling or chasing the shark. Do not make noise, nor allow a rush to one animal.
A photo lasts for a couple of seconds. A healthy whale shark may be able to travel these waters for decades.
Your Perfect Travel Season
If you want to swim with a whale shark, then August to November would be the first time I would think about South Ari Atoll.
However, don’t let the calendar deter you from traveling at another time.
The true appeal of the Maldives whale shark season is the year-round availability of trips for whale sharks in South Ari. That alters how you can plan your holiday.
One might wake up before breakfast, get onto a boat, while the sea is still calm, and sail towards a deep blue. There is a chance you could be looking for a long time and not find anything.
Then someone points. You look down. You are cruising under a large spotted whale shark.
Time and place and plan and even the resort disappear, just for a few moments, the camera, the itinerary. Time and place and plan and even the passing of time disappear, just for a few moments, the camera, the itinerary.
Only you, the blue ocean, world holiday vibes and one of the world’s most amazing gentle giants. It’s the Maldives I want you to know.
