Divers will find the Maldive’s peaceful, gently inclined underwater landscapes to be an absolute thrill. You’ll get to see amazing creatures like barracudas, moray eels, turtles, and schools of colorful fish. You may also come across sharks and tuna swimming nearby.

Best time to dive into the Maldives

The Maldives experiences its dry season from December to April, known as the northeast monsoon. This season brings mostly sunny weather and very few clouds. The ocean remains calm with little wind, making it a great time for diving. The water is crystal clear, with visibility extending up to 50 meters in the east and around 25 meters in the west. The clarity of the water can change depending on weather conditions, tides, and the season. Additionally, accommodation and liveaboard rates are usually higher during this time compared to the off-season.

For those planning Maldives Diving, it’s worth knowing that from May to November, the southwest monsoon brings wetter weather and stronger ocean currents. From May to July, water visibility is lower due to plankton being carried by the currents. During the period from December to April, the Maldives is in its dry season, known as the northeast monsoon. Hotel and liveaboard rates are lower during this period, but most boats are undergoing annual maintenance. From August to November, Hanifaru Bay offers a great opportunity to see manta rays feeding, you may also spot whale sharks. Additionally, this is the best time to visit Fuvahmulah in the southern Maldives to see tiger sharks.

When visiting the Maldives, there are several amazing water-based activities to try.

Amazing water-based activities

Snorkeling

The Maldives is famous for being one of the top snorkeling destinations in the world. The ocean life is stunning, with everything from tiny clownfish to huge stingrays and sharks. The sea is generally calm, but it’s a good idea to go with a buddy or check in with the boathouse about the best places to snorkel and current water conditions.

You’ll see so many kinds of fish, making it difficult to know where to start. The vibrant colors are mesmerizing, including the blue triggerfish and lively clownfish. If you take a closer look at the reef and rocks, you might discover a giant shellfish. You can also join snorkeling trips to a more distant reef.

Scuba Diving

The Maldives Diving offers exceptional scuba diving, celebrated for its warm, clear waters and spectacular marine biodiversity. You’ll find diving instruction for all abilities at most resorts, with courses designed for both first-timers and experienced divers. Beginners can start with pool training before venturing out to explore vibrant reefs teeming with turtles, rays, and sharks. Some resorts are dedicated to diving, with special adventures like night dives available. If you want the best diving conditions, aim for January to April, but remember it’s also the most popular and expensive time. Six Senses Laamu is a resort that is well known for the great diving and marine life that surrounds it.

Some resorts provide Kayaks with transparent hulls, so you can see the underwater views while you’re in motion. Keep safe from the sun by using a hat and sunscreen.

Jet Skiing

Jet skis are rare in the Maldives because they’re loud and can disturb the peace, especially at smaller resorts. However, larger resorts, such as one and only Reeth Rah, offer jet skis for those who enjoy high-speed water sports.

In the Maldives, banana boat rides provide a delightful and entertaining experience for families. You can generally find it year-round, though April to October is the preferred season.

Underwater Walking

Underwater walking is becoming an increasingly common activity in the Maldives. A helmet that provides a constant air supply lets you explore the ocean floor on foot. Compared to scuba, it’s a surface-level experience where you’re aided by a rope. This enjoyable and distinctive activity is perfect for all ages, basically, it’s good for people who fear scuba diving.

Kitesurfing

The ideal time is the low season, April to October, when wind conditions are optimal. Certain resorts cater to kitesurfing throughout the year. If you’re a serious enthusiast, W Maldives is worth considering.

Hi, there! I’m Helen, a writer for Vibes Group UK and an inbound content creator for the site journal. Every day is unique because I share my excitement for discovering new places with people who share my love of travel. My mind-blowing journey of learning lands anew has taken me along the untrodden ways, having grown up in a multi-cultural background and a country with endless serenity to explore. On the other hand, travel has shown me what is possible and how much work remains in combating vested interests, inequality, and environmental destruction. It’s hard to contain the buzz in the blood that comes from travelling or rising to a challenge, and you can’t always control yourself. Travel blogging is the perfect outlet to express my astonishment and bewilderment to the world. So, follow your heart, see what you can’t see, and leave a trail of Good vibes only!
