It’s 8:15 am. The waves pound the dark, gloomy coastline. It breathes and roars with power and strength. Flowing and touching each grain of sand. The aroma of the ocean fills the air. The sun is warm and bright, yet chilly snow is freezing me. This is a deep conflict between serenity and stillness.
Take a step back and look. What a beautiful vista!
Did you get it?
The view of the sea, sand, and sky colliding is captivating. But what if I told you there’s a beach where the sea, sand, and snow all come together? Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?

The stunning Hokkaido Beach in japan combines sea, sand, and snow, but that never meets. Consider walking on this beach and witnessing sea, sand, and snow consolidation.
Yes! That would be a mesmerizing experience. This unique phenomenon can be observed at San’in Kaigan Geopark, designated a Japanese Geopark in 2008 and a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2010.
This geopark is located in western Japan and stretches from the eastern Kyogamisaki Cape in Kyoto to the western Hakuto Kaigan Coast in Tottori. It is home to various geological sites relevant to the development of the Sea of Japan. As geographical features, it has ria-type beaches, dunes, sand bars, volcanoes, and valleys. Due to its diversity, the geopark is home to rare plants such as Pseudolysimachion ornatum, Ranunculus nipponicus, and Ciconia boyciana.
Hokkaido has numerous beaches. On a busy day, hundreds of tents line the seaside as people try to find shade and privacy on the sand. People have plenty of other gear, and BBQ is a requirement while heading to the beach in Hokkaido.
Beach cottages will frequently rent you all the necessary equipment, and you can get diverse delicacies like ramen and yakisoba from local stalls. If you don’t have a tent, don’t worry; you can always take a break inside some seaside establishments, which generally have chairs, cool drinks, and fans set up.
Here are some beaches for you to admire more.
Ōmori Beach
East Beach is on the eastern side of the prominent headland that forms the city of Hakodate. There are no official parking spaces; however, there are plenty of spots on the side streets. It’s a popular summer destination.
This beach is a short walk from Matsukaze-Cho Station, a streetcar station. There are spots to have a picnic or a modest BBQ with friends during the summer. There are few restaurants or cafes along this beach, although a few hotels are nearby.
Aso Beach Ishikari
Sapporo has two main beaches where folks go to get a tan in the summer. Zenibako Beach offers a more vital party atmosphere, with little shacks selling alcohol. With fewer people, Aso Beach is more tranquil, and the surf is calm and peaceful. The beach is open for camping, and the sunsets are breathtaking. No stores or camping supplies are nearby, so carry all your gear. There are paid parking places near the beach. Other notable locations are Hamanasu No Oka Park and the Ishikari Lighthouse. This region is also a haven for bird lovers. There is also an Onsen hotel nearby. Aso Beach is a peaceful beach with a panoramic view of Ishikari Bay, and it is worth a visit.
Otaru Dream Beach
During the summer, Sapporo residents flock to two prominent beaches. The first is Aso Beach Ishikari, while the second is Otaru Dream Beach. Ishikari Beach is more peaceful and calm to spend a summer day, whereas Otaru Dream Beach is noisier and more party-oriented, mainly due to increased beach bars along the coast. These bars are modest establishments that provide meals and BBQ materials while also providing tables for beachgoers to prepare their food. They also serve alcohol for those who wish to partake.
The ‘beach bars‘ are slightly run down and only serve as temporary bars and eateries for a couple of months. They remain open till the evening and occasionally until late at night. There are also beach party events on occasion. There is no genuine housing near this lengthy beach. However, there is a camping area on the beach. This beach is primarily for a younger demographic who enjoys BBQs, and while it is not very clean, it is a pleasant beach.
